Mummelsee

Mummelsee

Mummelsee is a circus lake in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). It has a size of 3,7 hectares, a depth of 17 metres und is situated at 1028,5 metres above sea-level.
It is located in the community Seebach near Achern in the northern Schwarzwald, directly at the foot of the Hornisgrinde, the highest mountain of the northern Schwarzwald.
The lake is the largest of the circus lakes in the northern Schwarzwald and is one of the most visited destinations along the Schwarzwaldhochstraße.

Its name is said to go back to the water lilies, that appeared numerously here in former times. In the vernacular these are also called "Mummeln".
The Mummelsee is surrounded by many myths. Also Eduard Mörike and Grimmelshausen were inspired by these mysterious, dark waters.

IInformation on the origin of such a circus lake can be found in the description of this Earthcache, which is archived unfortunately.

The touristic importance of the Mummelsee can be explained especially by it's location directly at the Schwarzwaldhochstraße.
On weekends the parkings around are usually occupied and it is very crowded on the footpath round the lake and around the hotel and the  souvenir shops.

To log this virtual cache:

Take a photo on-site, where:

  • The lake
  • The hotell
  • Your GPS-device/smartphone or yourself (where the showing of your face is not mandatory)

can be seen simultaneously

and attach this photo to your log.
Please do not send me this photo via Message Center or by EMail, this is not necessary - it is clearly enough to attach the photo to your log.

Logs without picture, Logs where the Mummelsee can not be identified doubtlesly and logs without your GPS-device/smartphone or yourself or that were retroactively mounted will be deleted without comment.
This is a requirement for the publicaton of these "new" virtual caches - no exceptions can be granted.

If you have some old photos by chance, that show the required elements:
It would be nice if you could use new pictures for this cache...
Geocaching should be an outdoor activity and not rummaging in old photo albums.
And it is so nice here that it is worth a second visit.

We would be very glad if you could also post a photo with lake, hotel and your geocaching nickname simultaneously.
This one should have been your task originally, but it is not conform to the guidelines for the new virtuals. This is why this duty is optional now...

You can write your nickname on paper, dance it, handicraft it on-site or be creative otherwise - main point is that it can be recognized well on the photo.

Kappler auf Papier   Kapplr aus Stöckchen
On paper   With sticks
